Memorial Day Staycation

One week from today, most of us will be taking the day to honor the Memorial Day holiday, which remembers those who have fallen by serving through the United States Armed Forces.

Some people may have plans to travel to beaches or cities outside of the Central Virginia region, but for those who don’t have any plans, consider taking a staycation in your own backyard.

If you can, gather the family and stay at a local B&B for a night, spend a day visiting local vendors you’ve “been meaning to go check out” or maybe check out a vineyard (or two) for the afternoon.

There are several B&Bs, inns and other establishments in the area. Even if you couldn’t stay the night, should availability be an issue, these inns would be an excellent place to visit, for example, the Fife & Drum Inn or the Aldrich House in Williamsburg and The Inn at Tabbs Creek in Mathews.

For the wine enthusiasts, go see what the local sommeliers are pouring up. Hope & Glory in Irvington has its own vineyard, Dog & Oyster, Williamsburg Winery, Good Luck Cellars in Kilmarnock or Athena Vineyards in Heathsville are all great options to visit.

And if you want something more low key during the long weekend, consider stopping by other local restaurant and specialty vendors – just for fun, or maybe to gather supplies for a Memorial Day barbeque that honors the solider, marine, seaman, pilot or other service member in your life.

Happy Memorial Day!
